How to Season Cast Iron Cookware

Properly maintained cast iron cookware is a joy to use. Seasoning standard cast iron is the key. While the enameled variety of cast iron cookware does not need to be seasoned, the standard black cast iron variety does. I have just written an article "How to Season Cast Iron Cookware ." In a nutshell, here are the proper steps:

1) Make sure the cast iron cookware is clean. Use a stiff bristled brush to scrape off any food remnants. Avoid using soapy water, since that will remove whatever seasoning is on the cast iron cookware.

2) Dry the cast iron cookware thoroughly. Apply a neutral oil like virgin coconut oil, vegetable oil, Crisco, or lard. Do not apply to much. Use wax paper, foil, or a clean rag to apply the oil.

3) Preheat your oven to around 350 degrees. Place the cast iron cookware on the top shelf, upside down. Place some aluminum foil on the lower shelf to catch any drippings. Cook for 30 to 60 minutes.

4) After the cast iron cookware has cooked for 30-60 minutes, let it cool down. Store properly, turned upside down, allowing air to circulate around the cookware. Do not store lids on the cookware, where air cannot circulate around it.

Cast iron cookware is best when used  daily. If you do not use it daily, take special care not to season it with too much oil, and that when stored, it has plenty of air circulating around it. If not, the oil can become rancid. That is not good.

When properly maintained, cast iron cookware is a joy to use, and can make you look like a professional chef! Happy cooking!
